Public Service.

The importance of public service.

Public service is often underappreciated for how much it truly affects everyone's quality of life in society. The roles of public servants both big and small are vital to the function and ability of a country and people. People who choose these roles have a great responsibility to maintain the public trust and the honor of their people. When people see servants in these roles they are not just seeing the person they are seeing the greater organization that they are representing. This is no small thing, a small interaction with those people can permanently alter the public perception for good or ill. I am a public servant currently and I strive daily to leave people with a positive perception of me and the uniform I represent. I fail often however these failures are not places to stop at, these are obligations on my part to improve what I can. You cannot win every battle in these circumstances however you can endeavor to do better next time. My own mother is a public servant as well and I see her striving to be the best at everything she does because it is a sacred trust and people are counting on her. My father as well was in private employment however he always taught me and showed me that you can make a profit and still give the customer a good deal. I have seen him go the extra mile for people not for payment but because that was the right thing to do. These types of roles require a sense of honor and compassion that is beyond the normal demands of average employment. This is all to say when you accept these roles in society you are quite literally entering into a sacred trust. You are expected to put aside your own personal gain for the betterment of others. This is a higher calling and cannot be taken for granted by those who serve. Service of ones fellow person is the highest calling one can do, and I often feel a great sense of gratitude and pride that I get to serve while making a living.

The secondary or really primary objective of this article is to recommend public service as a goal for everyone. You don't have to limit service to your career you can serve in simple and small ways in your daily interactions with people. Helping people carry things, holding a door open or even just listening when they need someone to listen. These are all still acts of service and love.

With gratitude and love,
