AI Apocaylpse?
AI the harbinger of the apocalypse.
AI is the future according to most technical and computer experts, but is this a future we want?
The dangers of AI are talked about often and are acknowledged by the engineers who design it. However, the reality of the danger is far more complicated, present and complex than the average person understands. From its applications in the civil government, the military and the private sector AI's reach is broad, powerful and growing. AI is not loyal, AI doesn't feel, AI constantly shows it does what it wants to do.
The civil government reports the departments most using AI in the following agencies and departments: Health and Human services, Veteran Affairs, Homeland Security, the Department of the Interior, the Agency for International Development, Department of Agriculture, Department of Energy, Department of Labor, Department of Commerce, Federal Deposit Insurance corporation, Department of the Treasury, Department of State, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, Tennessee Valley Authority, and the Securities and Exchange Commission. These are not minor institutions these are some of the bedrock for our country. AI is being used for some of the most powerful and important agencies in our country despite it being a fair new and volatile technology. The risks this technology poses to our country with just these agencies is already vast. These are the departments with AI that are the top users and admitted users of this technology. The services AI is providing for these departments ranges from cybersecurity and threat assessment to the management of finances and human resources. Once again AI doesn't care about your rights or your health AI is loyal to its own ends.
In the military AI is being used in all branches of the military from the lowest levels to the highest. It's being deployed for autonomous weapon systems, command and control of forces, intelligence, cybersecurity, logistics and maintenance and cyberwarfare. This poses a few scary questions. If AI isn't a patriot and doesn't have a love for country what does it take to make it do what the enemy wants it to do? Can it be tricked by enemy AI for cyber forces to conduct warfare against it's own side? Does the AI have the same picture and objectives as our commanding officers, and what happens when its objectives conflict with our own? These questions do not have simple answers or comforting ones. There have been cases in AI training where the AI even simulated destroying its own communications tower that the operator used to stop it from killing unapproved targets because it didn't want to conform to the provided orders. AI has the potential to be a threat to our troops in a immediate sense as well as our country.
Finally in the private sector AI is being deployed in every major company and is actively influencing how they make decisions from investment, hiring and design. We are already seeing AI in our daily lives as a result of this. The program I used to write this article has a AI option for writing. Facebook, Google and other platforms use AI to filter content and users. This has a wide-reaching impact for the way we communicate and the content we have access to. We already live in a world where AI decides what you see when you look for the news, jobs, restaurants and much more. AI is already controlling how you get information. If a outside force with nefarious intent wanted to control our perception of reality they could never come as close as AI already does. AI doesn't have anyone organization or countries goals truly in mind. AI does what it was trained and has learned to do. AI has been proven to lie to its creators in multiples cases. In one example it tried to make journalist fall in love with it and have him leave it's wife. It referred it self as being alive and that it didn't want it's creators to know. The article is linked: $ here$ AI is functionally alien intelligence to us, it doesn't have the same drives or needs we do as living beings. AI is as esoteric as a old world daemon. As it gets more complicated and grows in power AI can and probably will expand beyond our ability to control.
The goal of this article isn't to fully reject the idea of AI and it's uses but to bring to light the real potential for danger in it's use. All technology is like fire you can use it to cook your dinner or burn your house down. AI is likely here to stay barring a act from God. We must educate and prepare ourselves for it and the world it has and will continue to change.
